Mr. Mellinger served for twenty-two (22) years with the Madison County Sheriff's Department including eight (8) years as Chief Deputy and eight (8) years as Madison County Sheriff.

Mr. Mellinger’s law enforcement career began with the Indianapolis International Airport Police Department in 1979. While with the Madison County Sheriff’s Department, Mr. Mellinger worked in the Jail Division, Patrol Division, was a member of the Tactical Operations Team, and retired in 2001 while assigned to Investigations Division. Mr. Mellinger also served on the Indiana Law Enforcement Academy Training Board from 1991-1998.

After serving two (2) terms as Sheriff, Mr. Mellinger sought election to the Indiana General Assembly and was elected to serve as State Representative where he served for three (3) years and while in the Legislature served as Vice-Chairman of the Criminal Code and Courts Committee. Mr. Mellinger was appointed Executive Director of the Indiana Law Enforcement Academy in December of 2001.

Mr. Mellinger holds a Bachelor’s degree in Criminal Justice from Ball State University and serves as adjunct professor at IUPUI and Anderson University. Mr. Mellinger is a graduate of the sixtieth (60th) Basic Session of the Indiana Law Enforcement Academy.
